Whether you’re selling a home you’ve renovated or you just want to show off the work you’ve done on your own house, the holidays are a great time to highlight your home’s best assets. With the right holiday lighting, you can draw attention to your favorite features in a tasteful and fun way that will get just about anybody in the holiday spirit, even on the coldest day of the year. Here are a few of my favorite tips for lighting up the night this holiday season.
Identify Your Favorite Features
First, before you do anything else—before you buy a single set of lights—take a minute to look at your house and pick out your favorite features. Do you have a gabled roof that you’re just in love with? Love your windows? Even though I have more plans for them for the future, the windows are one of my absolute favorite parts of Love House, and so I always make sure that they’re a focal point of my holiday lighting plan.
Create a Plan for Your Lights
Once you’ve picked one or two features that you really love about the outside of your home, start putting together a plan. Too many lights can look jumbled and confused; too few and your house can look a little sad. With a plan, though, you can figure out just how many lights you want to have and how to string them together to create a gorgeous effect.
Place Candle Lights in Your Windows
If you want to feature your home’s gorgeous windows, you might be tempted to outline them in lights, but I’m not the biggest fan of that look for most houses. Instead, why not place an electric candle in each of your windows. The light will highlight your windows and give your home a warm, welcoming, and cheerful look.
Light Shrubs and Bushes with Net Lighting
If you have shrubs and bushes lining your house or the walkway leading up to your front door, you can throw net lighting over them for a pretty effect that’s really easy to pull off. It’s a lot faster and easier than trying to string lights through each of your bushes and then having to pick them out and wrap them up without tangling them when the holidays are over.
Hang Shimmering Ornaments in Your Trees
Another thing that I love about Love House is how many gorgeous trees we have. They give us shade in the summer, and they’re absolutely beautiful all year round, so I love drawing attention to them during the holidays. You can show off your trees in a couple of different ways, but I really love hanging shimmering outdoor ornaments among the branches. Doing this turns all of our trees into Christmas trees, and it transforms our yard into a holiday wonderland.
Remember, Safety First
As you’re creating your plan and figuring out where you want to put your lights, though, don’t forget to be safe. Only use outdoor, waterproof lights, and always use a sturdy ladder when stringing them. The last thing you want when you’re trying to decorate your renovated or restored home for the holidays is to break your leg falling off of a ladder or to cause a fire hazard with the wrong lights.
Keep your safety in mind and follow these tips, and I guarantee you’ll love the way your house sparkles in the night throughout the holiday season. Plus, if you’re selling, the right holiday lights can give your home that extra shine to make your buyers really want to make an offer.
