As designers who lend our eyes and ears out to real estate professionals all over the globe, it can sometimes be tough to keep ideas rolling and maintain a fresh perspective on things. But in our role as artists, creators and consultants, keeping our ideas new and our creativity flowing is an essential part of our success. Here are some tips and tricks that we have come up with to make sure that we don’t idea-burn out and that our concepts remain constantly edgy, savvy and current, no matter how immersed in a project we get.
Keep your ears open
Listening to the ideas of others is one surefire way to make certain that your own don’t grow tired. In our years of experience, we have found that keeping our ears open to the goings on within the design world and the world at large is an invaluable part of keeping ourselves on track. Read and listen to the work and words of other artists and designers who face the same creative challenges that you do. Surround yourself with people who revitalize you and encourage you to think in new ways.
Give your eyes a break
In our line of business, our eyes work hard to take in an abundance of new settings, possibilities and design elements all day long. This saturation can lead to an over-stimulation or even visual overload that makes it hard to take in and put out new ideas efficiently and well. It is important to rest your eyes – both literally and figuratively – and focus on something entirely different if you are feeling stale in the design department.
Remember what inspires you
Being surrounded by other’s inspiration constantly is not necessarily the greatest way to spur on further inspiration, though this principle might seem counter intuitive. Remember to spend time with the things, people and activities that really feed your soul. This might mean giving yourself time to read a book that you are drawn to, taking time to exercise outdoors if activity and nature inspire you or even taking yourself out on a ‘date’ or an outing that you wouldn’t normally indulge in. Remembering what aspects of art, design and building inspire you may be the missing link you need to keep those brilliant ideas coming.
Take a time out
Last but not least, take time away from churning out ideas to make sure that when you go back to putting them out, they are just as fresh, edgy and innovative as ever. Whether this means taking a vacation for two relaxing weeks or just taking a surprise siesta in the middle of the day, you are sure to emerge from your rest reignited, recharged and ready for action.
Design is so much more than a business. It is more meaningful than simply turning a profit and it goes much deeper than just surfaces or exteriors. We take care to constantly remind ourselves of these facts by keeping our ideas fresh, maintaining interest in inspiration from all over the world and knowing when to take a break.
